Artist's Comments

This is a picture of Gordon B Hinckley, President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. And also a person that I greatly admire and respect. I quickly finished this in memory of his wife's death a couple days back.

Also, on a more technical note, this is the first time I have done a portrait using graphite and charcoal. Took me about 8 hours in all to complete.

better than anything else you've
ever done (or put on dA).
great work! im sure he'll love it.

im interested as to how this was
done. the fine detail in soft lead
pencils first, then all the shading
in charcoal?

That is amazing - you got his likeness down and managed to capture character as well. I've been trying to find something to crit about it, but I can't. :D

 Thanks so much! I have to agree that it is my best work and I am hoping things keep improving.

Here is a run-down of what I did basically. I used powdered graphite for the background to start off with. (That stuff is way too messy to use often) Then I erased for the lighted stuff and used a 2B charcoal pencil for the shading and fine details on the face and tie. I then used a charcoal stick for the suit jacket and background to make it darker. So basically I did it all in charcoal, except the powdered graphite.

Thanks! I really wanted to catch his light spirit and twinkle in his eyes that he always has. And I hope others think it looks like him if anyone knows who he is. I know it could still use work because it isn't a perfect likeness like I wanted it to be.

And trust me, there are many things that could use improvement on this picture. . cause it ain't as good as I would like, but I am pleased.

Aww. . . President Hinckley will always be "The Prophet" to me growing up. Such a good role model! You seem to have *ahem* found a bit older picture of him, because I know for a fact that he doesn't have that much hair anymore! Hee hee. Good Job on his eyes Schiffy!

You have not yet reached the enlightenment of the coconut, master! How will you be able to teach the frog?

Never question the wisdom of the master, my young frog, otherwise complete barkdom cannot be reached! You must first learn the silence of the giraffe in order to even consider the greens and periwinkles of the coconut. . .you have much to learn...

But thanks about President Hinckley. . yes he will always be "the prophet" as you say. And I used the picture they have hanging around in the seminary buildings all the time. Sheesh! You should know these things!

Amazing. You're insanely talented with graphite and charocal. One can clearly see all the care that went into the picture and I'm deeply impressed. This is such a wonderful piece of art! :)

The way you drew his face, the hair and - most especially - the neck is beyond perfect. I bow to you for creating such a masterpiece  :)

Happy Easter :)

:blushes: Thank you so much! I did spend a lot of time on it and still wish I could spend more time on it, but my mother took it to be framed. I wouldn't go so far as to call it perfect, but I am glad you approve! :)

Happy Easter
